Getting to Niagara Falls, New York

Most travelers from elsewhere in the US reach Niagara Falls, New York by flying into Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF), which is 21 miles and 30 minutes by car from the falls. BUF offers year-round service from major US carriers and nonstop flights from cities like New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami. Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) is closer at 5 miles away but has very limited service, mainly to Florida and Myrtle Beach.

Driving is an option for those within a day's reach, such as from Cleveland (200 miles, 3 hours 15 minutes) or Philadelphia (410 miles, 6 hours 30 minutes). Amtrak's Maple Leaf train connects New York City to Niagara Falls NY station, about 2 miles from the park entrance, for those who prefer rail. Travelers arriving in Buffalo can also use NFTA public bus route 40, which takes about 50 minutes to reach Niagara Falls.

When to visit Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls is busiest from mid-June to early September, when fireworks light up the nights several times a week and hotel prices are at their highest. Expect crowds, especially around the falls and on boat tours, but also the warmest weather, with July highs averaging 81°F and lows around 63°F.

For fewer people and lower hotel prices, September and October offer shoulder season conditions. The boat tours still run, fall colors appear, and average October temperatures reach 60°F during the day and 44°F at night. This period suits visitors who prefer a quieter experience and cooler weather.

From November to March, winter brings the lowest hotel prices and the possibility of seeing the falls partially frozen. While boat tours and Cave of the Winds are closed, the falls are illuminated at night. January temperatures average a high of 32°F and a low of 19°F, so pack for cold weather.
